909 Workout – Roland TR-8S Jam

Let’s celebrate the #909day with this jam made with just 909 sounds, from the stock TR-8S library.

I always wanted to play like Jeff Mills, so I decided to make this tribute jam, on a TR 909 DrumKit.
For those of you who don’t know him, here is a fantastic video, which inspired me to do my stuff on the TR-8S: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eU-UsvYbIV0

There’s not a lot to say about the setup here, I just plugged the TR-8S main output into my audio interface and recorded one stereo file into Ableton Live. Then I just applied some saturation, compression, equalizing and limiting.

Hope you’ll enjoy this one and go make some music for the 909day celebrations 😉

A Big Thank You goes to all my Patrons: Ezia, Voltage Waves, Ledoux Henri, Wes Darling, Rob Schoen, Tim Charlemagne, Brian Lamb, Mario Godbout, Bill Hunt, Tzahi Shahak, Honey T, Luis Miguel De La Cruz, Angelantonio Majorano, Richard White, Dhruva Lance, Max Braun, A Cat Called Anarchy, Anders Björnberg, Eric Kdual, adriavox, TheSleepMachine, Maurice Gallagher, Kwaping, Togson, Wesley Griffin, Dan M45, Yannick Friess, Toff.Chunks, RuGe_live, Hugo Grimmett, Josh, Tony Perren, Tim Gough, Timothy Dempsey, Brandon N, Kamman, Ronald Rink, Laurence, Ricardo

Arturia SQ80 V – Demo and Overview – One Synth One Song

Is this the Synthwave Dream SoftSynth?

The Arturia SQ80 V is the latest addition to the V Collection and it aims to recreate the distinct sound of the 80’s cult classic Ensoniq SQ80 synth.

With its cross-wave (8-bit digital) oscillators, fed through a CEM 3379 analog filter, the original SQ80 (created by the same engineers responsible for the Commodore 64) was capable of a huge variety of timbres, from warm analog-style, to razor sharp digital, passing through aggressive and industrial tones.

Arturia’s recreation perfectly emulates all of the original circuitry, bringing to life this unique sound, full of organic imperfections, crunchy harmonics, and tangible lo-fi distortion.

But that’s not all: Arturia decided to expand and improve on the original project, adding more features and details, such as Dispersion (meaning subtle variations and inconsistencies in the behavior of the emulated circuitry), an Arpeggiator, 16 Voices Polyphony (the original had 8), MPE compatibility and more.

The SQ80 V also offers all of the advantages of the V Collection: Studio-grade onboard Effects, Multiple Interface Views (for straightforward synth programming), Enhanced Preset Browser (with tons of very nice presets) and In-App Tutorials.

All of that makes for a workhorse modern synthesizer with a classic 80’s character. Perfect for retro-style productions like Synthwave, Retrowave and Vaporwave.
But also good for other genres, from Ambient to hard hitting Techno.

You can check it out, learn more, and download a Free Demo here, on Arturia’s website: https://www.arturia.com/products/analog-classics/sq80-v/overview

I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy this one! 😉

Ableton Live Pro Mixing Trick Tutorial: Parallel Dynamic Equalizer using just stock devices

Let’s see how to transform the standard Eq Eight device into a full fledged Parallel Dynamic Equalizer.

Why is it so important?
This device will help you mix tracks, or groups or tracks, which play in the same frequency ranges using a simple concept: carving out common frequencies to create space for each track.

This Equalizer will dynamically cut frequencies based on an external audio source, avoiding masking and letting all tracks sit well and interact with each other.

It will work wonders when trying to blend lead tracks with full bases. For example a lead vocal to blend with the instrumental parts. But the same technique can be used to mix all sort of audio sources.

The same results can be achieved with very expensive third party softwares, but here we’ll see how to do that using just Ableton stock devices.

You can download the Ableton Live Project i created in this tutorial here, on my Bandcamp:
https://belibat.bandcamp.com/album/parallel-dynamic-equalizer-ableton-live-11-project
Just set price to zero and start downloading the album, you’ll find a zip folder containing the Ableton Live 11 Project.

Roland TR-8S + Empress Effects Zoia – Game Changer Setup and Interplay for Melodic Parts

The Zoia can drastically improve the TR-8S melodic capabilities, let’s see how to set them up to create stunning jams!

In this tutorial we’ll see two specific techniques to use the Zoia as an external midi device for the TR-8S.
– First, i’ll show how to create a midi keyboard on the Zoia, to play the TR-8S melodic samples in real time.
– Then, we’ll create a sequencer on the Zoia, to achieve the same result but with sequenced melodies.
Both these techniques can add a lot to the standard TR-8S features, so i hope you’ll enjoy 😉
Please let me know if you interested in further exploring the Zoia + TR-8S interactions, i’ll surely make more of these videos if you want.

You can download the Zoia patch used in this tutorial here, on my Bandcamp: https://belibat.bandcamp.com/album/roland-tr-8s-zoia-integration-zoia-patch
Just set price to zero and start downloading the album, you’ll find a zip folder containing the Zoia patch to import in your pedal.

Belibat for Every Day in June – Jazz-tronica Live Jam w/ Sax, Roland TR-8S, Zoia

A heavily processed Sax, sounding like a synth and soloing like a Master + a mighty Drum Machine. Does it sound good to you?

Let me present you a very talented musician, performer and producer: Every Day in June (Jordan Philippe).
Every Day in June is an eclectic project where acoustic instruments and synths blend with electronic beats to create a beautiful and emotionally dense texture. I highly recommend to check out the freshly released album Wall of Sound and immerse yourself into its vibrant world of finely crafted electronic music: https://wiseband.lnk.to/Every-Day-In-June-Wall-Of-Sound
Also, check out his youtube channel for more of his videos, very well worth it!
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAHEVA7v40oKgVLBBz4FhBg

Now about this jam: we met each other online, Jordan sent me one of his videos and I immediately thought it would be awesome to create a jam together.
We never talked to each other and had very concise text messages. But we had the opportunity to let the music speak, and in that sense, I think we understood each other very well!

This collaboration is something special: a nod to Jazz, with modern electronic sounds. The willing to experiment on one side and our own ties with tradition on the other.
We wanted to create something raw and sincere, like a real jam between us.
I hope you’ll enjoy this trip!

And now, since I know some of you want to know, here are some details about the setup (on my side).
The Roland TR-8S played all the drum sounds plus the main bassline and the synth pad.
You can see me creating all patterns live, on a 8th Triplets set sequencer.
The Zoia pedal was used for midi purposes and to play a random synth line which you can hear in the second part of this jam.
Basically I created two midi sequences on the Zoia which were sending control change messages to the TR-8S to change the Tune for the Bass and the Synth Pad, actually sequencing them. I also connected an expression pedal to the Zoia and then sent it as midi cc to the TR-8S to control the Synth Pad filter cutoff, to manage tension.
I used the Zoia stompswitches to launch the midi note sequences and the random synth line, then I managed that synth live filter cutoff using the Zoia wheel.

A Big Thank You goes to all my Patrons: Ezia, Voltage Waves, Wes Darling, Rob Schoen, Tim Charlemagne, Brian Lamb, Jens Martin Arvesen, Mario Godbout, Bill Hunt, Tzahi Shahak, Honey T, Luis Miguel De La Cruz, Angelantonio Majorano, Richard White, Dhruva Lance, Max Braun, A Cat Called Anarchy, Eric Kdual, adriavox, TheSleepMachine, Kwaping, Togson, Dan M45, Yannick Friess, Toff.Chunks, RuGe_live, Hugo Grimmett, Tony Perren, Tim Gough, Timothy Dempsey, Brandon N, Kamman, Ronald Rink, Ricardo, Heleno Cardoso Santos, Cole Peebles, George Lincoln, Kev Adams, Louis Rumley, Moy Cohen, Michael Balmer, Carsten Klenner, Rus, Laurent, David Ingram, Jeremy

Live Improv Electronic Music on a minimal, dawless setup – Roland TR-8S + Empress Zoia

For this Live Improvised Set i wanted to go deeper in my search for the best minimal setup, and i found the Roland TR-8S and the Empress Effects Zoia pedal can work wonders together.

Here the TR-8S sends midi clock to the Zoia, while the Zoia audio output is fed into the TR-8S external input. To get benefits from the sidechain and the master fxs.

The Zoia patch includes two synths with their own random sequencers. I set buttons to control the sequencer randomizers, to refresh sequences every now and then, their filters cutoff, sequencers timing and envelopes.
So basically, any synth sequence coming from the Zoia is randomized and quantized to play in the right scale (Cm).

Then i managed to do something very useful in this setup: i created midi cv keyboards on the Zoia, to control the Tune parameter of some tracks on the TR-8S. This way i can play synths on the TR-8S like with an external keyboard.
I connected an expression pedal to the Zoia to control filter cutoff on a TR-8S Riser track, for buildups.
So, the Zoia was sending midi ccs to the TR-8S through a midi cable.

The TR-8S main output was connected to my audio interface and went to my mac for the stream audio.
And that’s it! Hope you’ll enjoy 😉
